Chef to professional poker player - not the most common road traveled, but it is one that worked for the newest World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit champion, Ben Hock.
Hailing from Brookfield, Wisc., Hock turned professional just eight months ago with aspirations of poker greatness.
After he played very conservatively for three days, his dreams became reality when he won the WSOP Circuit Main Event at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Repeatedly battling back from a short stack on Days 1 and 2, Hock entered the final table third in chips.

"The Poker Players Alliance spent $900,000 in 2007 to lobby the federal government on online- gambling legislation.
The group, which says it represents 800,000 poker enthusiasts nationwide, lobbied on a bill that would exempt poker from a law that restricts online gambling, and for legislation that would regulate the Internet gaming industry, according to a disclosure form posted online Feb. 15 by the Senate's public records office. The alliance spent $780,000 lobbying on those issues in the second half of 2007.
It's legal to play poker online, but the law made it illegal for domestic banks and credit-card companies to process payments to online gambling businesses. The act, passed in 2006, bars financial institutions from handling gambling transactions, with exceptions for lotteries, horse racing and fantasy sports.
The Poker Players Alliance is chaired by former New York Sen. Alfonse D'Amato.
Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995."

After braving wind, sun, insects and a tension filled heads up that lasted only a few hands, Travis Rice emerged as the winner of the Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic over the weekend when he saw off second placed James Mordue to collect the winner's cheque of $800 000 and the respect due to the top dog in a starter field of 546 players, many of them top international professionals.
Rice, famous as an Internet poker ace playing as 'Travesty Fund' said he was delighted by the major land tournament win which took just over eight hours in all to finalise.
Mordue, equally tormented throughout the al fresco tournament by hot, windy conditions and flying insects, had to be content with the second place prize of $478 405.
There were several young guns taking advantage of the 18 years age limit on the event, including rising Internet poker star and WSOP sensation Annette Obrestad, but this time around they were not really to feature among a field that included the likes of Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Freddy Deeb, Annie Duke and Joe Sebok."

Can Yang save poker's face?
"It seemed odd when Jerry Yang started praying aloud at the final table of the World Series of Poker's Main Event. Poker players don't normally ask for divine intervention while playing a game often associated with the devil.
At first, I was incredulous. I am a God-fearing man, and I'm not afraid to admit that I believe in the power of prayer, but asking for help from the Big Guy during a poker hand? That's a bit much, given my experience watching people pray on the battlefields of Iraq.
I was a little bit insulted, and actually quite put off. I found myself cheering against this 'ordained' would-be-champion. But all that changed once Yang spoke after winning Main Event.
The guy seems honest. "

888 Has `Encouraging' Start to 2007, Helped by New Online Games
"888 Holdings Plc, the second-largest U.K. Internet gambling company, has had an ``encouraging'' start to 2007 after introducing new games and recruiting more customers.
That will maintain its momentum during the traditionally quieter second quarter, Gibraltar-based 888 said today in a Regulatory News Service statement.
888 lost about half its sales in October when a U.S. crackdown on Internet gambling cut the company off from its main market. In response, 888 raised research spending to a record $19 million and introduced a new casino game almost every month in 2006's last quarter. This year, it has added games such as Crazy Blackjack."

Road to the WSOP: Taking a Risk on Poker – Bodog Beat

Chris Hamman is one of the online poker players who won a $12,000 prize package to the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event through Bodog Poker. Just as the 2006 Main Event champion was a member of Team Bodog, Chris is one of the qualifiers who will look to carry that torch at this year’s event.
He has been playing poker for about 25 years and online at Bodog for the last few. He has played against Bodog pro Josh Arieh in one of the weekly TLB heads-up matches and said that he “seems like a pretty nice guy”."
